Pictures and description of my vista install coming soon!

Thinking about installing vista

I'm going to assume that you are running a Compaq v2000-series notebook. You'll want to have another machine handy in case you have driver issues and need to download!

Memory is good. Vista seems to run happily with 1GB memory. Disk space: You will want to have at least 15GB free on your hard drive...my vista installation is currently taking up about 13.5GB. I would plan on a 20-30GB partition if you've got the room.

Second, get the file from Microsoft. Save it to your PC and burn the .iso file to disk using a program like Alchohol 120% or Burn4free.

While you're in the downloading mode, you may want to also get the Office 2007 beta. It's....interesting, and gives you a feel for where Microsoft is going. I have also installed OpenOffice.org 2.0 on Vista, it seems stable and happy. Did I mention that OOO is free?

With your Vista install disk and product key, you're ready to go. In my experience, my v2565us came right up with standard Vista-included drivers with no major issues.

Once your Vista configuration is complete, you will want to manually update some drivers....

On ATI-chip systems, you'll want to get the "Catalyst Beta Driver for Windows Vista Beta 2" which you can also find by going to www.ati.com; then Drivers & Software->Windows Vista; Windows Vista Drivers and Software; Notebooks with ATI Graphics; Catalyst Beta Driver for Windows Vista Beta 2.
In most cases you will want the Windows Vista 32bit drivers.

Next stop...hp/Compaq support. Grab the XP drivers, in most cases they will work fine with Vista.
The touchpad driver that Vista will install is very touchy. I'm using the Synaptics Touchpad Driver 8.2.4L and it's working fine.
The Conexant CX20493-58 Modem driver 7.33.0.0 A had some errors but appears to have installed enough to work.
As I mentioned above, I took the latest driver from ATI.
The wireless drivers should have installed directly, if not you can install them here.
